DHS Science & Technology Directorate

S&T runs a wildfire sensor technology program that has deployed chemical-sensing early-detection units built by N5 Sensors in Hawaii and Colorado (including 100 sensors in Gilpin County and 20 in Jefferson County, CO in 2024). A 2025 DHS OIG audit found the sensors did not consistently detect fires, putting the program under scrutiny.
