On Aug. 4, 2026 the Forest Service awarded Research Triangle Institute a $1,156,000 contract, directed by the FY2026 appropriations act (P.L. 119-74), for an independent study of the efficiencies and impacts of separating the agency's wildland fire operations from its land-management mission and consolidating them with the U.S. Wildland Fire Service, covering operations, workforce, finance, infrastructure and interoperability. The RFQ closed June 8, 2026 and the final report is due Feb. 15, 2027.
