The department announced $1.8 million in awards on July 29, 2026 to eight organizations for firebreaks, vegetation management, grazing based fuel reduction, evacuation access improvements and defensible space work. Recipients include Aina Alliance at $300,000, Malama Learning Center at $298,828, Aina Momona at $228,584, Waiohuli Hawaiian Homesteaders Association at $300,000, Kailapa Community Association at $300,000 and West Kohala Wildfire Alliance at $300,000. Smaller awards went to Waialae Iki Ridge and Waialae Iki V at $47,588 and Wailea Property Owners Association at $25,000.
